Established at Cal Poly Pomona in 2013, RISE (Residential Intensive Summer Education) is a free, immersive, pre-enrollment summer program for high school students and incoming Cal Poly Pomona first-year students.  RISE was founded in alignment with Cal Poly Pomona’s longstanding mission to promote Black student success through culturally responsive programming centered on leadership development, academic preparedness, cultural identity, and community engagement.

In alignment with CSU policies and Cal Poly Pomona programming, RISE is open to students from all backgrounds. At the same time, the program remains intentionally designed to address persistent educational inequities by centering culturally responsive practices and targeted support pathways that foster student success.

Building on this foundation, we are proud to introduce an additional cohort, A-RISE, supported through the CSU Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Student Achievement Program. A-RISE applies RISE’s proven, community-centered model to support Pasifika students, extending the program’s impact while preserving the core values, structure, and mission that define RISE.

Through engaging activities and interactive sessions, RISE provides participants with the resources, mentorship, and community connections needed to thrive in higher education and beyond.

RISE is structured across multiple cohorts to support students at different stages of their educational journey:

    1. RISE UP
      • Rising 9th and 10th graders only (July 26–28)
    2. RISE ABOVE
      •  Rising 11th and 12th graders only (July 19–23)
    3. RISE BEYOND
      • Newly admitted Cal Poly Pomona first-year students only (July 12–16)
    4. A-RISE (NEW)
      • Pasifika (students of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Pacific Islander diasporic backgrounds), grades 9–12 (July 19–23)
Cohort placement is determined by academic standing, program eligibility criteria, and alignment with specific RISE support pathways. All students who submit an application to participate in RISE are evaluated independently, with emphasis on the provided writing response.
